Outer Banks Kids Activities

The Outer Banks is very kid friendly! Although we are known for our natural sandy beaches and historic landmarks, the Outer Banks has many other areas and activities for kids of all ages to explore. Here are some of our favorites:

Outer Banks Children's Museum --   Children can learn through play by exploring the different exhibits including a boat, lighthouse, submarine and wonder wall!

Children at Play is located at the Buccaneer's Walk Shopping Center in Kitty Hawk at MP 4.5.

Jockey's Ridge State Park -- The East Coast's largest natural sand dune is the ideal spot for running, jumping, kite flying and climbing.  If that was not enough, the State Park also has some wonderful nature programs that teach children (and adults) about local wildlife and ecology. Don't miss "Sunset on the Ridge," their most popular program, and take in the gorgeous views and colors of a spectacular sunset. This event takes place most nights on the top of the ridge just before dark.

NC Aquarium Roanoke Island -- The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island offers lots of learning opportunities as well as fun.  Watch the Osprey in their nest on the bird cam, touch a stingray or horseshoe crab in the touch tank, and don't miss the daily shark feedings! Many exhibits on fish and wildlife native to our area as well as displays of storms past and present and the damage they left behind.

Jennette's Pier and Aquarium -- Come see the latest addition to the NC Aquarium family. Rebuilt after Hurricane Isabel destroyed the original wooden pier, this 1000 foot, concrete pier features aquarium exhibits, pier house, tackle shop and snack shop. Learn how important fishing was (and still is) as part of the Outer Banks culture.
