The Way We Were is an oceanfront beach cottage in Nags Head that represents the traditional "Old Nags Head Style" home, with wrap-around porches and shuttered windows. Rich in history, The Way We Were was originally built in 1921 and has stood the test of time through nine decades, and many hurricanes and storms , including the famous Ash Wednesday nor'easter of 1962!
Treat your family to the simple vacation style of yesteryear, with lazy days spent lying in the hammock or rocking on the porch watching the waves roll in. Enjoy the day on the beach just outside your front door by swimming in the ocean, searching for seashells or taking a walk to nearby Nags Head Pier and Restaurant. You'll have spectacular panoramic views of the sea to the east. To the west is Jockey's Ridge, the largest natural sand dune on the East Coast!
Jockey Ridge State Park, directly across the road from the cottage, offers deckside views of hang gliders, dune climbers and spectacular sunsets. You'll be lulled to sleep by the waves in one of the three ocean-front bedrooms.
The Way We Were offers classic beach living, but also features High Speed Internet Access, Cable TV with DVD player and CD player. A large water heater ensures a warm shower for all. Five window A/C units and four floor fans provide cooling in addition to the ocean breezes.
In keeping with the old-fashioned nature of this beach cottage, it does not come equipped with an automatic dishwasher or a washer and dryer. However, it does have plenty of easy-to-wash dishes and new non-stick pots and pans, along with stainless steel cookware if that is your preference. In yet another old Nags Head tradition, the porch features clothes lines and plenty of clothes pins for hanging up wet bathing suits and towels to dry in the fresh beach air.
While each bedroom has its own sink, the main bathroom is located downstairs, off the porch. It has a shower, but no tub and another half bath is next door. These rooms were added to the back of the cottage when "city water" first became available and bathrooms were considered a luxury, even though they do require a short walk down the wrap-around deck. While a bit out of the ordinary, it's a wonderful way to catch the breezes after a shower.
A charcoal grill is available for guests, as well as an outdoor shower for rinsing off sand after a walk.
Experience the Outer Banks the way it used to be at The Way We Were cottage.
