From Currituck County located at the northern end to Dare County is located in the heart of the island, all the way down to Hyde County located on the southern end. What is the difference between Oceanfront and Oceanside?

The Outer Banks is a very long but narrow chain of barrier islands located off the east coast of North Carolina. It is the ideal family vacation spot and we know that when you vacation at the beach your rental location is a top factor! You can stay Oceanfront which means means there are no other buildable lots between your vacation rental home and the beautiful OBX beach however, there may be sand dunes or foliage. You can also stay oceanside, oceanside homes are located east of the beach road ( NC 12 ) but have usable lots between or oceanfront homes between them and the beach. Depending how wide the east side of beach road (NC 12) is, distance to the beach may vary. Some homes in more narrow towns may be less than 50 feet away, while others in wider towns may be much farther. Learn more about how vacation rental companies define each area on the OBX before you book your next vacation! We've got the full scoop here on our OBX Vacation Home Locations page.

What does soundfront mean?

The slender chain of barrier islands located off the east coast of North Carolina known as the Outer Banks is fully surrounded by water. On the eastside of the Island you’ll see the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean and on the West side of the island, you'll be able to watch breathtaking sunsets over the sound. A Sound is a large body of water situated between two bodies of land that connects to the sea or ocean. Some areas have less water and look a bit marshy while other areas can be quite deep. Soundfront refers to homes located in the lot closest to this body of water. If you’re on the OBX you don’t want to miss a soundfront sunset!
