Nags Head North Carolina is one of the Outer Banks top vacation destinations today. From its humble beginnings with only a few residents in clapboard cottages, this diverse town has grown to satisfy all vacation interests, from the serious sunbather to the serious shopper.
Legend has it that Nags Head got its name from the horses, or "nags," that early residents lead back and forth on top of the high dunes with lanterns tied around their necks. Offshore vessels would mistake the lights for ships gently bobbing at anchor and would be lured to a supposed safe harbour only to run aground on the shifting sands of the coastline. The town's "land pirates" would then loot and sink the ships after setting the hapless crews adrift.
From this colorful beginning, Nags Head grew to encompass the largest section of outstanding coastline in the entire Outer Banks with eleven miles of incomparable oceanfront. There's plenty to do for the water worshipper, from parasailing and surfing to fishing off one of Nags Head's two fishing piers, to hang gliding at Jockey's Ridge State Park. With the tallest natural sand dune system on the eastern seaboard, views of the Atlantic ocean and Albemarle Sound are breathtaking. There are numerous nature trails and boardwalks where you can get up close and personal with the local ecosystem. Tour the Nags Head Ecological Preserve, a 640 acre area of wetlands, dunes and forest, or even visit nearby Bodie Island Lighthouse.
On the lighter side, there is an amusement park to attract families and couples alike as well as a four star rated Scottish links golf cours. There are more restaurants than you can count -- from Fatboyz Ice Cream & Grill to Tale of the Whale's dining under a romatically lighted waterfront gazebo, your tastebuds will never tire of the endless possibilities. For the serious shopper, you can tour Gallery Row, a unique art mecca.
