Kill Devil Hills is actually the name of the county's oldest township-- not to be confused with the large dune, Kill Devil Hill, where the memorial pylon to the Wright Brothers stands. How did the curious name come about? Local legend says that it was named after bottles of rum that washed ashore from the occasional shipwreck back in the colonial days. It was remarked that the rum was "strong enough to kill the devil." Another story-- less credible, in our considered opinion-- said that the name came from one enterprising man's attempt to extort money from the devil by burying Old Lucifer in a pit at the foot of the large dune where the Wright Brothers monument is now located. We like the first story better.
There are about 6,800 year-round residents in this community. Kill Devil Hills has a regional recreation area that includes a fitness trail, a roller hockey rink, children's play area and ample parking. There's an NC Wildlife boat access area that includes a boat launch area and vehicle parking. Two estuarine access areas with gazebos are located on Hayman Boulevard and Third Street.
