But don't mispronounce its name; you just may upset the locals! It's not pronounced like the Toyota car with the same spelling, but the second syllable is actually an "all" sound-- as in "ca-RALL-a." It will take some time, especially if you're a Toyota Corolla owner like myself-- but you'll get used to it.
The town has several shopping centers where you can find everything you need to have the perfect vacation. There's even a hammock store. Restaurants range from fast food chains to Chinese restaurants. And of course, there is the fantastic seafood, locally caught and cooked fresh. It almost feels like a crime, to go to the Outer Banks and not taste some of the delicious shrimp, crab, or scallops that are practically thrown at your feet.
Corolla is known for its large population of the Outer Banks Ponies. There are almost 120 of these wild horses roaming the beaches, believed to be the descendants of Spanish Mustangs that swam to shore when their ships were wrecked in the Atlantic. So don't be surprised if you glance up from your beach book and there happens to be several horses trekking carelessly across the sand. The island is also famous for its lighthouse, on Currituck Beach. It's open for climbing, and this is an experience that should really be taken advantage of; the kids will love it. It's amazing how different the island looks from so high above--and what a great way to watch the sunset.
There's always something to do while vacationing in the Outer Banks. Wine festivals, concerts and exhibits are but a few of the many goings-on in the small Town of Corolla. They're a great way to meet the locals, or even fellow travelers with interesting stories of their own. And the island is filled with other towns that are just a short drive away, where you can find diverse activities.
