Don't let the strange name fool you--Duck, NC has actually been voted by the travel channel as a Top Family Beach for several years. And considering that the town was only founded in 2002, that's pretty impressive. Today it's growing more and more popular, as people begin to realize just how perfect a Duck vacation can be. Yet it's still often called the perfect spot for a "quiet getaway." The beaches are never too crowded nor is it so desolate that you'll have a hard time meeting anybody.
Duck was named for its large population of waterfowl life, which makes this town a great vacation spot for bird watchers. There are plenty of other activities, enjoyable for any age. Among them are water skiing, jet skiing, surf fishing, hang gliding, boating (you can rent boats from several different places), surfing, swimming, kayaking or just lounging around the beach. In addition to all these fun activities, Duck now has a beautiful park centrally located in the heart of the village. Here you will find a children's playground, large common grassy area perfect for soccer or picnics, nature paths and a boardwalk over the sound. Daily activities are scheduled from May through October including Tai-Chi, Yoga, jazz and blues concerts, children's storytelling, theatre and more. The park is dog friendly, so you four legged friend can join in on quality family fun here. Duck is a great place to bring the family. The Outer banks is a safe environment and a great way to spend some quality time together, even if it's just a quick getaway for two.
Seafood is abundant here, as it is all over the North Carolina Barrier Islands. Almost every restaurant you'll find will have seafood options. It's caught locally, so the freshness will astound you. If you're planning a trip to Duck, or anywhere on the Outer Banks, then you have to taste the seafood. It's that simple. Unless, of course, allergies or a simple distaste prevent it. Then of course there are pizza shops, Chinese food restaurants and of course, good southern home cookin'. There are also a number of coffee shops and ice cream parlors to satisfy that post-dinner sweet tooth.
If you're looking for an interesting way to spend an afternoon, stop by the Army Research Pier in Duck. This was established to observe the affects of strong wind, water, and other natural forces on the Outer Banks. Over the years they have collected the data to help explain these natural phenomena and to help prepare Duck and other Barrier Islands for hurricanes and Nor'easters. Boaters who come to visit Duck may especially find this interesting, with information on currents and wind directions.
